July Long Weekend Update

The Hurley was graded last week which exposes new sharp rocks and there are reports of lots of flat tires so be prepared! It will be a busy weekend on the Hurley so drive safe and stay on your side of the road. If someone is behind you and wants to pass, please pull over and let them pass safely.

Thanks to Debbie Demare for the lastest update and photos.  The Lillooet FSR gate is open past the Hurley turn off which was closed for a washout last week. Watch for nasty potholes on the paved section after you turn off the Pemberton Meadows Road. The winter washout on the section past the Tenquille Branch is currently being repaired.

Thanks to Debbie Demare for the latest Hurley update from Wednesday morning. Three degrees and raining. Grader from Donnelly Creek towards summit working.  Otherwise pretty good shape. Maybe 7 out of 10. Washout from last November passable but not back to previous shape. I’ll follow up on that one otherwise switchbacks headed to Pemberton in good condition.

June 9 Update

The Hurley is being graded and the grader is working from the Pemberton side and as of last night was at the 6km marker. Thanks to Randy Perazzo for the update.

The East Hurley  avalanche site has been cleared. The large culvert which periodically washes out (near the Interwest logging site from 2 years ago) is fine at the moment. The small culvert crossing 1km in from the steel bridge was blocked last fall and flooded the road. It has now been cleared out and the road bed raised and it’s flowing as it should be. Interior Road and Ministry of Transportation have been notified that the road needs to be graded and other basic maintenance to occur. This request will be followed up on.

Today Tom has plowed to about 500m from the summit and got further than he thought. The km’s on the Squamish side can be difficult but he is hopeful he can break through tomorrow (Thursday). If not, he will start early on Friday to get it open for the weekend!  As soon as it is open, it will be posted here. Thanks for the great work Tom!

Opening Update

The big question everyone has been asking is “Will the Hurley be open for the long weekend?” We still don’t have an answer and will provide updates as soon as they come in. There is still a high risk of avalanches in the Green Mt area and last we heard was the danger would remain till Wednesday. FLNRO are checking back in with avalanche technician today and we will update as soon as we know more.

Sled Vandalized

Lots of people are asking about the Hurley opening and as soon as we have any news it will be posted here. The avalanche technicians will take a look at the slide paths this week but say we are still a few days out from conditions being safe.

Unfortunate message from Kathy Milne from Backcountry Snowcats about damage to her snowmobile parked on the Hurley. If you have any information please contact Kathy or Pemberton RCMP.
Sometime between when I parked it on Sunday night and today, my sled was vandalized. This is usually my transportation out over the Hurley and now it is inoperable.
Please post this and alert everyone. Besides the gas that was taken, the 12v battery was ripped out.
This and the unnecessary damage to the rest of the sled is hugely disappointing especially when we are helping to facilitate the summer opening at our cost.

Avalanche Photos

Thanks to Julie-Anne Chapman from She Shreds Mountain Adventures for sending in these photos from recent avalanches on the Hurley.  Several shots of some big ones on the East Hurley that deposited a small forest on the road. The winter season is coming to an end. Ride safe up there!

Lots of people are already asking about the snow removal this year.  Sledders are unloading at the 9km marker on the road from the Pemberton side. When we have the updates, they will be posted here.
